Follow These Instructions for Successful Paper Piecing

If you are new to foundation paper piecing, it may seem counterintuitive to piece in this manner. But, the process is simple. We have provided generic paper piecing instructions here so that you can successfully do foundation piecing. Use these instructions to make our four sizes of flying geese (1/2" x 1", 1" x 2", 1-1/2" x 3", 2" x 4"), 4" log cabin blocks, or 4" pineapple blocks, or any other foundation piecing blocks

In paper piecing, the front of the foundation paper is the reverse of the finished block. You will cut fabric pieces for each numbered piece so that each piece covers the area indicated by the number plus a 1/8" seam allowance (or larger). Be careful that the shape of the piece covers the area when placed right side down on the front of the foundation paper. To Top

Cut the first piece to fit right side down over piece 1 of the foundation paper plus a seam allowance. To Top

Cut the second piece to fit right side down over piece 2 of the foundation paper plus a seam allowance. Do this also for the remaining pieces of the block. To Top

Place piece 1 and piece 2 right sides together on the foundation paper back with either one or the other lined up on the foundation paper. To Top

Turn back to the foundation paper front and sew on the line between piece 1 and piece 2. To Top

Line up the sewn piece on the back of the foundation paper right side up and place the third piece right side down on top, with seam allowances (between piece two and piece three) lined up. To Top

Turn back to the foundation paper front and sew on the line between piece 2 and piece 3. To Top

Line up the sewn piece on the back of the foundation paper right side up and place the fourth piece right side down on top, with seam allowances (between piece 3 and piece 4) lined up. Continue in this manner until all pieces are attached. Then sew the block into your quilt. To Top
